LONGSTANDING TRADITION
By HOWARD HINTERTHUER July 7, 2004
Milwaukee Country Club in River Hills traces its history to 1894. "The first club was on Downer Avenue," says George Saites, club manager. "We’ve been around for 104 years. Many of our members are third and fourth generations."
Member selection is the purview of the Membership Committee, Saites says.
Through the years the club has played host to many high-level golf events such as the 1969 Walker Cup and 1988 United States Golf Association’s Senior Amateur, plus state professional and amateur invitational tournaments.
"The clubs that have long-standing traditions will continue to be strong into the future," Saites says.
Tradition is something that carries over to the staff at Milwaukee Country Club as well. Skip Simons has been head golf professional for eight years, but started there in 1976 as a caddy when Manuel De La Torre was head pro from 1951 to 1996.
"He still teaches from 7:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.," Saites says of De La Torre. "Then you’ll find him on the putting green. Manuel was USGA Teacher of the Year in 1987."
